Air Conditioning Glebe

Iron roofs, no insulation and upstairs bedrooms that hold the heat until midnight. Glebe has its own cooling problem, and often more options than the terraces further east. Epic Air Group covers air conditioning repairs, installation and replacement across 2037.

Your reliable and professional air conditioning repair services in Glebe

Glebe is Victorian terraces, semis and workers cottages under corrugated iron roofs with little ceiling insulation. That roof radiates heat into the upstairs bedrooms for hours after sunset, which is why a system sized off floor area underperforms here.

The upside is that many Glebe houses have a usable roof void, so ducted is often possible where it is not in the terraces further east. Epic Air Group handles air conditioning repairs, installation and replacement across Glebe. ARC licensed technicians, fixed quotes and a 24/7 call out.

Your reliable and professional air conditioning repair services in Glebe

When an air conditioner stops cooling in Glebe, the cause is usually one of about eight things. But the bigger Glebe question is often not the air conditioner at all. It is the roof above it.

Iron roofs and upstairs bedrooms

A lot of Glebe is Victorian terraces, semis and workers cottages with corrugated iron roofs and little or no ceiling insulation. On a 35 degree day that roof can reach 70 degrees, and it radiates straight down into the upstairs bedrooms for hours after sunset.

That is why a system sized off floor area underperforms here. The room is not fighting the outdoor temperature, it is fighting a hot roof. We size off the real load, which means the roof construction and insulation go into the calculation alongside window area, orientation, ceiling height and occupancy.

It is also why ceiling insulation is sometimes the better first spend. If a customer is about to put in a system under an uninsulated iron roof, we will say so. Insulation is not our trade, but a correctly sized system under a hot roof still costs more to run than a correctly sized system under an insulated one.

Glebe has more options than most inner city suburbs

Unlike the terraces in Surry Hills and Darlinghurst, plenty of Glebe houses are semis or freestanding, and a lot have had rear additions with a usable roof void. That opens up ducted air conditioning, which is often not possible further east.

Where a roof void exists, ducted gives the cleanest result. Only the return air grille and the outlets are visible, and we zone the system so the upstairs bedrooms can run overnight without the ground floor running with them.

Where there is no void, a multi head split system does the same job room by room, with one outdoor unit in the rear yard or courtyard serving three or four indoor heads.

What we check when an air conditioner stops cooling

Our air con technicians run the same sequence every time. Measured airflow across the indoor coil, refrigerant pressures and superheat, electrical draw on the compressor and fan motors, condensate drainage, and the control signal between head unit and outdoor unit. About an hour on a split, longer on ducted.

What we do not do is top up gas and leave. Refrigerant does not get used up. If a reverse cycle air conditioner is low on charge there is a leak, and topping it up without finding that leak is money you spend again next summer.

Faults we see most often in this part of Sydney

  • Ducted systems in hot roof spaces losing capacity through uninsulated or crushed flexible duct.
  • Blocked condensate drains in terrace walls, showing as water staining on the ceiling below the indoor unit.
  • Failed capacitors and contactors on units over eight years old, usually why a system hums but will not start.
  • Zone motors that have stopped moving, so a closed zone never opens and one room gets nothing.
  • Control board faults on older inverter models, throwing an error code and shutting the unit down.
  • Undersized systems that were sized off floor area under an uninsulated iron roof.
  • Fan motor bearings on rooftop package units above Glebe Point Road shops.

We carry common parts on the van, so most air conditioning repairs in Glebe are finished on the first visit. Where a part has to be ordered, you get the price and the lead time before we leave.

Repair, or replace the air conditioning unit

The honest answer depends on three numbers.

Age. Most residential air conditioning units run 10 to 15 years in Sydney conditions. Past 12, a major component failure is rarely worth chasing.

Repair cost against replacement. Once a quote passes roughly half the cost of a new air conditioning system, replacement usually wins on a five year view, because an inverter unit uses noticeably less power than a fixed speed unit from 2012.

Refrigerant type. Systems running R22 cannot be legally recharged with that gas any more. If an R22 unit has a leak, replacement is the only sensible path.

We give you all three and let you decide. Nobody here works on commission, which is why our quotes sometimes say repair it when a replacement would have paid us better.

Heritage, terraces and condenser placement

Much of Glebe sits in a heritage conservation area, which generally rules out a condenser visible from the street. In practice that means a rear yard, a side passage or a bracket off the back wall, and it needs thinking about before anybody drills.

Side passages are the trap. They are narrow, often shared with a neighbour, and a condenser in one has very little room to breathe or to be serviced in ten years time. We will tell you when a position will cause problems rather than installing it and leaving you with it.

Yards here are small and fenced, so condenser noise carries. We mount units to keep night time noise within council limits, with anti vibration mounts as standard rather than an upsell.

Share houses, rentals and student lets

Glebe has a lot of rental stock near the university. If you are a landlord, the cheapest unit is rarely the cheapest decision. A correctly sized split system with accessible filters costs less over five years than two bargain installs and a string of call outs, and tenants can actually clean the filters themselves.

For strata apartments near Blackwattle Bay, committees want approval before any penetration of common property, the installer's licence and insurance, and usually a nominated condenser position. We supply all of that. For newer Class 2 buildings we also do rectification work on base build systems that were never commissioned properly.

Air conditioning for Glebe Point Road shops and cafes

A cafe needs make up air to balance the kitchen exhaust, or the front door becomes impossible to open and the dining room runs negative. A shop needs the air conditioning unit commissioned before the fitout handover date, not a week after. Both need the work done outside trading hours.

We do commercial air conditioning installation, commercial repairs and planned maintenance across inner Sydney, with in house mechanical engineers for design work when a project needs drawings rather than a product recommendation.

Service and maintenance that stops the call out happening

Most emergency air con repairs we attend were avoidable. A yearly service costs a fraction of a compressor.

A proper air conditioning service means cleaning filters, chemically cleaning coils where needed, clearing and treating the condensate drain, checking refrigerant charge against design, testing electrical connections and current draw, and verifying the system holds setpoint under load. On a ducted system we also check the duct runs and zone motors, which is where Glebe systems quietly lose capacity.

Why Glebe customers keep calling us back

  • We turn up when we say we will. A time window and a call before arrival, not a vague morning booking that eats your day.
  • Fixed quotes, no hidden fees. The price we quote is the price you pay, with flexible payment options on larger installations.
  • Licensed, insured and accredited. ARC authorised, accredited with FPA Australia and Engineers Australia.
  • Lifetime workmanship guarantee. We stand behind the install, not just the warranty on the box.
  • 24/7 availability. Air conditioners fail on long weekends and in heatwaves. We answer the phone then too.
  • Advice before sales. If insulation would help you more than a bigger unit, we say so.

It is why a lot of our Glebe work comes from neighbours and repeat customers rather than advertising. See the standard of it in our projects.

Systems and brands we work with

  • Ducted air conditioning. Concealed in the ceiling, zoned, only grilles visible. Often possible in Glebe where it is not further east.
  • Multi split systems. Up to five indoor heads on one condenser, independent control in each room.
  • Split systems. One indoor head, one outdoor unit. Best value for a single room.
  • Cassette units. Ceiling mounted, four way discharge, common in shops and offices.
  • VRV and VRF. For larger commercial sites and multi level buildings.
  • Ventilation and exhaust. Kitchen exhaust, make up air, carpark and bathroom ventilation to code.

We supply and service Daikin air conditioners along with Mitsubishi Electric, Fujitsu, Samsung, ActronAir and Panasonic, and repair all makes and models including units we did not install. Using inverter air conditioning rather than older fixed speed models cuts running costs.

Questions we get asked in Glebe

Can I get ducted air conditioning in a Glebe terrace?
More often than people expect. It depends on whether there is a roof void deep enough for the fan coil and duct runs, which many renovated terraces and rear additions have. We check on the first visit and tell you either way.

Why are the upstairs bedrooms so much hotter?
Usually an uninsulated iron roof radiating heat down for hours after sunset. It is a load problem, not a fault, and it has to be in the sizing calculation.

How often should I service my air conditioner?
Once a year for a home air conditioning system, twice for kitchens, gyms and busy retail where the air carries grease or dust.
